How Linux Could Trump Unix
Source: OS Opinion
Can Linux replace Unix? This question would have seemed ridiculous just a few years ago, even as Linux vendor Red Hat's (Nasdaq: RHAT) stock shot toward the stratosphere. Now, although Linux hype has subsided in the financial markets, the open source operating system has carved out a solid niche in the enterprise and is still gathering steam.
In fact, if Unix vendors' recent moves are any indication, Linux' momentum has them worried. Many of the largest vendors, such as IBM (NYSE: IBM) , Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) , have begun to sell Linux server options alongside their own proprietary Unix offerings.
So, what is the true answer to the question? Can Linux dethrone Unix and become the server operating system of choice? It all depends on who you ask -- and on your time horizon.
