Are you a hacker?
By: JesterS
What is a hacker? [ Hacker is a term used by some to mean "a clever programmer"
and by others, especially journalists or their editors, to mean "someone
who tries to break into computer systems." ] In my opinion a "hacker"
is a person who dedicates his time to learn how computers and the communication
between computers work. WHAT? You know what a hacker is? "Yeah, it's
a person who does l33t things..." Wrong.
People who use computers to commit unethical and amoral acts
are not hackers, they are sad troubled people. What? Kevin Mitnick is
your idle? You want to go to jail for doing stupid shit like stealing
software? You want to start an online hacker gang and be like, Vladimir
Levin. Or cheat a radio contest and win a Porsche 944 S2 like Kevin Poulsen.
Then go ahead, and those sad immature kids who follow you can have fun.
But you will earn no respect from the true masters of the computer world.
Those individuals who use other people's "software" to exploit
bugs in Operating Systems and/or software, and call themselves hackers,
are nothing more than losers. Those of us who spend long hours at coding
and programming do want people to use our software, but not so they can
take all the credit for "there so called skills". There's nothing wrong
with testing your own computer limits and security, but when you try
this on a person who has little knowledge of computers, you are violating
hacker ethics.
There is only one exception when you are allowed to use computer
skills for destructive hacking, that is when he/she has treated an another
human being unjustly. An example is where a group a Chinese youth, have
hacked there government's webpage, demanding freedom, liberty and justice.
( I will not mention their names, and or there group handle. ) I have
seen 12-21 year old "KIDS" sit on IRC and send someone a Trojan, for
no reason other than they can. How does this make you a hacker? How does
this show your skill? I have seen groups of so called hackers, like SSH
( Sesame Street Hackers )who hack stupid things like NASA computers,
only to put there logo & elmo, saying "were coming!". What the hell is
that? What does that tell the world? You can hack space computers? I
think you have smoked to much of that green. Last year, there was a big
DOS attack on Amazon.com and other companies, what did it prove? That
some stupid kids could use a program to flood a company, so they couldn't
do business? I guess you’re a hacker then.
I guess what I am trying to say is, today's generation is; "script
kiddies". I mean that with the most respect to the programmers, but what
else would you call us? Highly skilled computer people? Hell no, we’re
just a bunch of stupid kids who smoke weed, drink and play computer games.
Will it change? No. There are those people who get a rush from doing
stupid things, we can't change this. Those of us like myself, will spend
our whole lives upgrading security so these attacks and immature people
can do very little to disrupt the hard working people of the Internet.
We come together in Hack In The Box, 2600, Def Con, Hope2k and other
organizations to help and to learn. Next time you think your cool, leet
or a hacker think about how stupid you really are. Peace for now.
