Anonymous DOJ Breach More Embarrassing Than Harmful

Anonymous claimed to have seized internal emails and other information from a Department of Justice serve earlier this week. That doesn't appear to be the case, based on an analysis of the actual torrent file.

A group of hackers associated with hacking collective Anonymous released a torrent file allegedly containing 1.7 GB of data stolen from "the United States Bureau of Justice" onto Pirate Bay. In an online statement, the attackers claimed to have seized "shiny things" such as internal emails and a database dump. The group said it was trying to "spread information" and to show "the corruption that exists" within the government.

The "United States Bureau of Justice" presumably refers to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, a component of the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs. According to its Website, Bureau of Justice Statistics collects, analyzes, publishes, and disseminates information "on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government."
