Australian internet users manage up to 50 online passwords

Australians are using up to 50 online passwords and creating false identities in a bid to maintain their privacy in the virtual world.

A new report by the Australian Communications and Media Authority shows Australians are adopting more varied strategies to keep their information safe online. Of the 2509 respondents, 65 per cent said they were managing between five and 50 online passwords, with 51 per cent saying it was becoming difficult to manage multiple passwords.

Yet the report showed despite a dizzying number of passwords, users were re-using them or creating similar logins, increasing their vulnerability. Online behaviour also dramatically changed depending on the websites visited and for what purpose. The report highlighted three common online identities: social networking such as Facebook; transactional such as banking sites; and professional such as LinkedIn.
