Data breach in Essex exposes details of 400 people
Essex County Council is investigating a serious data security breach, which could leave hundreds of people at risk of identity theft.
A council worker at Essex County Council is believed to have sent personal and financial data of 400 people in care to an unauthorised recipient, according to a report by local news website This Is Total Essex.

ICO to investigate Tesco following data security claims
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is to investigate Tesco after research revealed failings in the retail giant's security.
According to Computing, Tesco will be asked to explain the alleged poor security practices of its website, including allegations that it stores login and password information in an unhashed and unsalted format, does not use HTTPS on some pages and emails passwords to users in plain text.

UK threatened to arrest Assange inside embassy, says Ecuadorean minister
Britain has told the Ecuadorean authorities it believes officials can enter its embassy in London and arrest Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, according to Ecuador's minister for foreign affairs, Ricardo Patino.
The development came two months after Assange walked into the embassy in a bid to avoid being extradited to Sweden where he faces allegations of sexual assault. At a news conference on Wednesday, Patino said Ecuador would announce its decision regarding Assange's asylum request at 7am (noon GMT) on Thursday.

NHS Trust fined GBP175,000 for 'entirely avoidable' data breach
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has fined Torbay Care Trust (TCT) £175,000 for a data breach it said was "entirely avoidable".
The Trust, based in Devon, had published "sensitive details" of over 1,000 employees on its website in April 2011, the ICO said.

BT backpedals on claims almost every Android device has malware
Late last week, I wrote about some eye-raising statements made by a British Telecom (BT) security expert at the NetEvents Americas. Now, BT has backpedaled on the claims. To refresh your memory, here's what Jill Knesek, head of the global security practice at BT, said:
We analyzed more than 1,000 Android applications and found a third compromised with some form of active or dormant malware. Almost every device is compromised with some kind of malware, although often it's not clear if that code is active or what it is doing.
