WISE BIRDS tell us here in Vienna that ATI and at least some of their knowledgeable partners don't feel so bad about NV40 Ultra. Even though the NV 40 Ultra, Geforce 6800 Ultra is a very fast card that outperforms everything else on planet for the time being, the ATI next generation chip might end up even faster.
The canaries are singing that 12 pipelines, 475MHz/950MHz card with 96 bit precision and PS 2.0 shader only will end up faster then 16 pipelines, 400MHz /1100MHz cards with 128 bit precision and PS 3.0 shader model.
On Monday, Keyspan said it had begun shipping a "USB Server", a device to allow USB drives, printers, and other devices to directly connect to a network.
Much like a USB print server, the device also allows other USB devices, such as scanners and thumb drives, to be connected on a LAN. The $129 device contains an RJ-45 connector and allows 4 12-Mbit USB devices to connect to the LAN.
For gearheads on the go, ever-smaller computers mean the capability to pack ever more power in a bag or even a pocket. Party-going gamers may want to take a look at Dell's recently launched desktop-replacement gaming laptop, while folks who are all thumbs might like Vulcan's palmtop that has the capabilities of a laptop.
An ambitious attempt to build a makeshift supercomputer from hundreds of random laptops has missed its target of breaking into the list of the world's top 500 fastest machines.
More than 700 volunteers gathered at the University of San Francisco on Saturday to build the "flash mob supercomputer" using their own laptops. But many of the volunteered computers were simply too unreliable for the whole system to run "in parallel" for long enough to reach top speed.
Broadband phone service provider Vonage will make available portable Wi-Fi phones later this year to help defend itself against AT&T's expansion into its market, a Vonage executive said Monday.
With the phone, Vonage subscribers can make and receive phone calls within range of Wi-Fi wireless access points normally found in homes, airports, cafes, fast food restaurants and other high-trafficked areas, Executive Vice President Michael Trembolet said. The phone could also work inside any home outfitted with Wi-Fi networks, he said.
