Ruminations of Mac OS x86
With Motorola falling behind in the Megahertz race with Intel and AMD, even the staunchest Mac-o-phile must wonder what would happen if Apple ported Mac OS X to run on PC hardware. Well this Macweek article takes a look at the possibility. It's certainly feasible. Darwin has already been ported to run on a PC, and remember that NeXT's Openstep OS (Mach kernel) also ran on PC hardware. Driver support could be made more manageable by releasing an Apple approved x86 system, and then releasing additional drivers down the line. Classic Mac applications support could be done by software PowerPC emulation. This certainly isn't an original idea. Rumors of such pop up all the time, but it does make for an interesting read all the same. Check it out.
