CrimTrac to upgrade to new biometric identity system

Australia's peak law-enforcement technology agency CrimTrac is looking to upgrade its national automated fingerprint identification system (NAFIS) with a biometric identification system by 2017.
The agency has gone to tender to look for a biometric identification system that would have the potential to not only recognise fingerprints, but also palm prints, footprints, and facial images.
The current NAFIS only provides enforcement agencies with access to fingerprint data. Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Counter-Terrorism Michael Keenan said in a statement that the new system will be required to not only integrate with existing law-enforcement systems, but also be able to advance as CrimTrac's biometric capability expands.
