Sorry it took me so long to reply - I just noticed this posting a few days ago. Eitherways, I've already informed ob-1 about this, and he'll be on shortly to address this issue you speak of. Next time, e-mail us directly instead of posting comments - I don't go around moderating all the comments so its kind of hard to keep track. If you feel its important enough to make a public post about it, then I think you should have e-mailed us about it as well.
Auth probe
Alright, after checking just about everything on the server and still not
being able to replicate your problem, i would like you to contact me via
email at ob-1@hackinthebox.org with some info...
What page where you on or accessing when the probe took place?
Where you logged in as a member or viewing the site anonymously?
does it happen every time you view the site or just once ?
does it happen when the page loads initially or after you view a certain
part of the site?
i can assure you that this is not "an
automatic-hack-the-surfer-or-whatefer-script"
for several reasons...
The 1st reason for this is by looking at the large number of hits we have
to the site each day the server wouldnt be able to cope with scans,
and this number is growing each and every day.
2nd why would we bother? it would go against everything we here at HITB
stand for, that being 'keeping information free'. Also what would be
gain? IF we where to scan users when they visit the site its a sure way to piss$off and garuntee them not wanting to come back resulting in HITB
failing.. This obviously hasnt happened with the continued growth and
expansion of HITB. I look forward to your email with
the above information in order to clarify the situation for you.
Cheers
ob-1
re. eileen.hackinthebox.org
I was a wandering through the site when I noticed the above post about eileen
I checked it out on my own machine and I am recieving similar packets, whats goin on?
What are you running?
What precisely are you running, cause we can't seem to simulate something similar on our side. I really have no idea what it could be, but trust that we aren't running any strange scripts on our surfers - we don't have the bandwidth to do something like that anyhow!
Re: What are you running?
I get similar packets across my firewall when I pop mail from my linux box.
Its a connect back from popd I guess
Do these users have mail accounts or are you running an inline mail popper on some of your pages (I'm new to this site so I have no clue how your setup, BTW great site)
Also I'm curious as to what your running is this "everything" or "PHP nuke" or something along those lines?
hope that was helpful
